The new facility--called the Advanced Technology Center--will be used for semiconductor manufacturing process development, equipment demonstration and customer training. Axcelis has been working on developing the $31 million center for two years, according to a company representative.
Axcelis started life twenty years ago as a division of Eaton Corporation but spun off two years ago to become an independent public company. It currently employs 2,000 people in 49 locations in nine countries. Its worldwide revenue last year was $941 million. In addition to the facility here, Axcelis has manufacturing facilities in Peabody, Massachusetts, Rockville, Maryland and Toyo, Japan. The company has a joint venture partner in Japan with Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. This joint venture, which is known as Sumitomo Eaton Nova, or SEN, produces ion implantation equipment in Japan.
