The university awarded McCarthy Building Companies Inc. the contract to build the project, the company's third for UC San Diego in the last year. McCarthy is also building the 110,000-sf Powell-Focht Bioengineering Building.

The four-story medical research building totaling 146,382 sf will be built on the UCSD campus and include a vivarium, wet laboratories, animal facilities, conference center and support facilities.

McCarthy will perform all concrete work on the project. Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership of Portland is project architect.

Newport Beach-based McCarthy is aggressively pursuing growth in San Diego County, according to company officials. McCarthy is wrapping up a job as general contractor on the $28 million addition, renovation and upgrade of The Lodge at Torrey Pines. It's also performing preconstruction work on The Lodge at Black Horse Farms in La Jolla.

"McCarthy has identified San Diego County as a prime area for growth," says McCarthy Executive Vice President Ron Hall.
