Pier 1, as it's called, was built in 1931 as a 90,000-sf waterfront warehouse and distribution center for the C&H Sugar Refining Corp. As part of the redevelopment, Pier 1 was expanded to 151,000 sf by "floating" a mezzanine over the ground floor without altering the original exterior architectural design.

"Pier 1 is an excellent example of a conservation of an historic pier. As the first project of its kind in San Francisco, it has set the standard for others to follow in the futuristic pier," says Judge James Wilson, chief executive of the Bournville Housing Assn. Trust in Birmingham, England. "As the first project of its kind in San Francisco, it has set the standard for others to follow in the future."
