Dallas-based Centex Construction Co. has garnered the general contractor's award. Centex has just completed a school for the tribe for students in kindergarten through grade 12.

A Centex contact tells GlobeSt.com that the construction projects were mortared in the ongoing relationship between contractor and client and not based on hard bids. "Much of the same team who is completing the Apache K-12 School will continue on with these two new projects. This continuity gives Mescalero a team who understands their culture and values and can incorporate these ideals into the new facilities," says Rick Johnson, Centex vice president.

The new casino will be 40,000 sf and will provide room for 1,000 slot machines and 25 game tables. Centex will begin the casino work in July, with the hotel makeover launching shortly thereafter. The elder care center will start later in the summer. All projects will deliver in 18 months to 24 months.

The 250-room Inn of the Mountain Gods will be transformed into a premier resort destination with convention center, spa, retail corridor and ballrooms. The majority of rooms will offer lake views and extensive in-room amenities. Golf, hunting, clay shooting, horse stables and skiing will continue to be attractions at the hotel. Being added is a 20,000-sf spa and fitness center with indoor, outdoor pool, steam and exercise rooms, saunas and Jacuzzis.

The 46,000-sf elder care and kidney dialysis center will house a 40-bed nursing home and 20-bed assisted living area. The dialysis treatment facility is practically a must-have since the closest center is 30-some miles away, says the Centex contact.
