The visitor center had originally been slated to open along with the new Science Museum, but federal funding never came through. Now the McKnight grant will allow the 2,000-sf center is to open in early 2003.
The visitor center will provide a gateway to national parks, according to Kathy Wilson, a vice president with the museum. The National Park Service will lease the space from the museum for about $50,000 a year.
The center will provide information on the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. The recreation area covers a 72-mile section of the river starting near the cities of Dayton and Ramsey and stretching to just south of Hastings. It is composed of 54,000 acres of land and water. The center will be free and can be used by visitors to plan trips to the parks and sites operated by the park service.
