"It was very important to establish a new identity for the site," Bayonne Mayor Joseph Doria said in announcing the name. He indicated that the name derives from several suggestions from the public, including the fact that Bayonne's nickname is The Peninsula City and its harbor has played a key role in the city's development.
Under the aegis of the Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority, the plan is to turn the massive tract into a mixed-use community that could have upwards of 13,000 residents. Its business (office, retail) components are expected to create as many as 15,000 jobs. While no timeline has been officially announced, the $32 billion project is expected to take at least two decades to build out.
Under current plans, that build-out would total some 18 million sf of space. The project would be configured into six districts, to be called Bayonne Village, Bayonne Point, Harbor Station, The Landing, The Loft and The Maritime Industrial.
