The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled the ordinance that allowed Detroit officials to pick three casino developers was invalid because it relied on preferential treatment.
The band demands the three existing casinos in Detroit--MGM Grand, Greektown and MotorCity--to shut down because of the ruling. A judge will hear the case May 1.
According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board, the three casinos togetherearned more than $1 billion in 2001. The state takes 8%, about $80 million, for K-12 classroom education. Detroit takes another 9.9%, about $100 million, for development and improvements in the city.
