Michael Mullen notes the REIT now is overseeing the development of the two largest intermodal facilities in North America as well as working with two of the largest railroads in the US. The major tenant at the CenterPoint Intermodal Center, the former Joliet Arsenal site, is the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.
"We're very pleased to have been selected by Union Pacific," Mullen says. "We foresee opportunities to expand this business locally."
Mullen says the container yard is expected to open this fall while the intermodal facility's completion is see in the fall of 2003. It is being built near the junction of two interstates, I-88 and I-39. However, the REIT is working with local and state officials on getting funding for improvements to a smaller but critical highway, Illinois Route 251.
