The new tower is part of a building boom that is bringing a total of some 4,000 new guest rooms to Atlantic City, not to mention new retail properties and a variety of other development projects. What's unusual about Bayview Tower is that it will be light on new gaming capacity – it will have "only" 450 new slot machines – and heavy on opulence. According to David Jonas, general manager of the property, the new tower is designed specifically to cater to the so-called high rollers. Standard guest rooms will be a generous 500 sf, and the entire top floor will consist of just eight suites, each with two bedrooms, living and dining rooms and butler service.
The expansion is seen by many as a pre-emptive strike against the massive, $1 billion Borgata, a 2,000-room resort hotel that Boyd Gaming and MGM Mirage are building right across the street, slated to open next year. Besides Harrah's Atlantic City and the Borgata, expansions are also underway at the Tropicana and Resorts International casino hotels. And Harrah's is also expanding its Showboat property here.
