Haggerty's proposal, which will come to the Board of Supervisors after it is considered by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority, or JPA, extends the lease through the end of the 2007 baseball season. During this week's Board of Supervisors meeting, Haggerty said that extending the lease would be a positive step toward keeping the A's in Oakland.
Under the proposed agreement, the A's would pay rent for their use of the Coliseum, with a base rent established at $450,000 a year plus 50 cents per ticket for all sales above $2 million. "This is not so much about the deal,'' Haggerty says."This is more about preparing people to get them ready to secure the A's future in Alameda County for a very long time.''
At their meeting, the supervisors heard testimony from Michael Crowley, the team's president, and Oakland A's fans who urged the supervisors to approve the lease extension proposal. "I'm here today to urge you to approve this lease extension,'' said A's fan Chris DeBenedetti. He added that the extension would remove the dark cloud of relocation that's been hanging over the A's for several years.
