While the 29-acre airport site near Carmel Valley Village is zoned for residential use, the Delfino family, which owns the Carmel Valley Airport, has operated a small airport for private planes for legal, non-conforming use.

The Delfinos submitted an application last year to develop the airport parcel, and increase density on the property from one home per acre to ten. Even though the property is zoned for residential use, the application seeks approval for other land-use possibilities, including "clustered" residential development, affordable housing, multi-family housing, or commercial, recreation or resort facilities.

But some county officials and residents say that this plan will take away the airport and community open space. This week, the county said that it will review the proposal as an impartial assessment.
