Company officials say Bismonte is leaving to "pursue other interests." Bismonte, through a spokesman, declines comment on where that may lead him.

If those interests include remaining in the real estate industry here, top-level positions are open at two local office REITs – Equity Office Properties Trust, the largest US office REIT; and Prime Group Realty Trust, working its way out of a potentially fatal cash crunch.

Following Bismonte's resignation, TrizecHahn decided to eliminate his position, resulting in senior vice presidents Steve Budorick, Paul Layne and Doug Winshall taking on his former responsibilities as well as reporting directly to president and chief executive officer Christopher Mackenzie. Despite that managerial move in the wake of Bismonte's resignation, Mackenzie has praise for his former exec.

"He was a key player in what we've accomplished operationally over the past years," Mackenzie says in a statement. "I can't imagine how we could have done it without him. I have valued the opportunity to work closely with him, and I admire him as a real estate professional."
