Built in 1924 by the Aluminum Cooking Utensil Company of America to house a plant for its line of Wearever products, the building located on the Oakland-Emeryville border was sold to the Flecto Co., the Verathane manufacturing company, in the 1970s.
Flecto abandoned the building at 1001 46th St. two years ago. The new project will transform the building into a residential condominium with 79 townhouse and loft units, ranging in size from 800 to 2,100 square feet.
Due to the original construction of the building, there are 50 different floor plans. The development also includes a new addition -- several two-story townhouses atop the building that have 18-foot-high ceilings.
The renovation project is envisioned as a "smart growth'' project that will benefit both Emeryville and Oakland.
