Contributions from individual investors have raised nearly two-thirds of the cost of the building, which museum trustees say shows the city's strong support for the new building. The new museum will be 292,000-sf, as opposed to the 140,000-sf of the old building.
The design by Herzog & de Meuron integrates the museum with the park, featuring pathways that are natural extensions of the park; outdoor and indoor courtyards; and education tower; and historic elements from the current museum. The museum will be located in Golden Gate Park near 10th Avenue and Fulton Street.
