"The need in Bristol County was such that we had to beef up our presence here," Janet Zipes, communications manager for the Food Bank, tells GlobeSt.com. "We didn't want them to have to go into Boston to get food." Zipes notes that the soup kitchens are staffed largely by volunteers and having the facility here enables them to focus on distribution.
The levels of unemployment is usually a good indicator of food need, Zipes points out, and this county has the highest average unemployment rate in the state, at 3.9% Fleet Foundation and Philanthropic Services provided a $125,000 contribution towards the Food Bank's expansion. FleetBoston Financial gave a $25,000 grant and donations were given from local businesses and individuals.
