Plans for the property are uncertain and officials won't comment, but the site is expected to be redeveloped in the wake of the sale. Originally developed by Landmark on this city's Main Street back in 1979 as an urban renewal project, it is currently the subject of various proposals.

One scenario has new owner JSM at Somerville turning it over to affiliate Edgewood Properties, which would expand and redevelop it. In an earlier proposal, Livingston, NJ-based Sterling Properties offered a plan to add apartments to the site, razing one wing of Downtown Somerville Shopping Center and replacing it with two four-story luxury buildings totaling more than 140 units in the process.

According to a published report, McDonald's has already initiated an application to move to a vacant Boston Market store nearby. Such a move could pave the way for development of a residential component on its current site in the shopping complex.
