Earlier this year, the MCDA applied for funding to continue Minneapolis' brownfields pilot program, which originated in 1999. The city will receive $150,000 to continue and expand brownfields assessment efforts, and $50,000 to assess brownfields for green space purposes.

A brownfield is a property that could be redeveloped or reused. Through this program, the MCDA has completed environmental assessments on four Hennepin County tax-forfeited "orphaned" or vacant sites. The EPA's pilot program focuses on orphan sites, which previously had been given low priority due to size, location, level of perceived pollution or unusual circumstances.

The city will use the $150,000 to complete testing and redevelopment planning at sites, all of which are in the city's Near North neighborhood. They include a former store and fuel storage site, a property with possibly polluted fill and the former site of an autoand radiator repair service. With the $50,000 grant, the MCDA will evaluatecontaminated at two sites for cleanup and future use as green space.
