While the nearly two-decade old structure has undergone upgrades in the past, an ever-increasing caseload prompted officials to make the expansion. An 85,000-sf expansion was planned in 1990 before economic issues postponed the endeavor. Tucon's renovation entails several room expansions, as well as the addition of six courtroom sets, a new Grand Jury room, a child waiting area, and a media room.

Architecture firm Moseley, Harris & McClintock, which has been involved in many of the property's renovations in the past, is the project designer. Judicial Center experienced 15 minutes of fame in 1994 as the location of the trial of Lorena Bobbitt for mutilating her husband.
