Five Star general partner Paul Chacon says the 600-car garage, which won approval recently from San Diego's Centre City Development Corp. will be the first of several parking facilities Five Star expects to building throughout the city over the next several years.

Downtown has grown into a 24-hour city in recent years, Chacon notes, boosting demand for parking among shoppers, diners, workers, tourists and others. He says the ground floor retail at the structure will be designed to accommodate an upscale restaurant with outdoor patio seating.

The new facility will be designed by Tucker Sadler Noble Castro, in conjunction with International Parking Design, with Nielsen Dillingham Builders as general contractor. Construction is scheduled to begin in October, with completion slated for July 2003.

Five Star is San Diego County's second largest parking operator with 57 locations, 28,000 spaces, 600 employees and more than $10 million in annual revenues. It also operates the Las Americas Shopping Center outlet mall and Park Shuttle & Fly, an off-airport parking lot.

Nationally, the company generates $220 million in annual revenues and employs more than 2,000 workers.
