The project involves remodeling lab space in a five-story building constructed in the mid-1970s. The labs are used for cell biology research. The two-phase project, designed by Dallas-based Omniplan, is to be completed in March 2003.

The target area is sandwiched between classroom and research floors that will remain operational during construction. "We are committed to minimizing disruption during this project," Michael Krueger of McCarthy said in a prepared statement. Special attention is being placed on noise and vibration control.

The UT campus is abuzz with construction sounds as it forges ahead on a $255-million, two-building research facility contracted to Austin Commercial. That project, announced in mid-April, will add 865,000 sf and is being touted as the state's largest campus research project ever built. It represents the fourth phase of a biomedical research plan.
