Lucent officials would not specify where the jobs will be cut, only that they will be system-wide and the cuts will occur by the end of the year. Observers speculate that the company's headquarters complex here and its two R&D locations in Holmdel, NJ will be among the locations most affected.

Lucent currently employs just over 9,500 in the Garden State, a number that's down from 16,000 just two years ago. Overall, the latest round of reductions will pare the company to a workforce of about 45,000 compared to 155,000 two years ago. Many of those staff reductions resulted from the spin-offs of Agere Systems and Avaya, as well as the sell-off of the company's fiber optics division.
