O'Hanlon returns as regional managing director at a time when other companies, including Cushman & Wakefield, are luring away top performers from Grubb & Ellis, which has long been the subject of merger rumors.

O'Hanlon replaces former senior managing director Michael P. McKiernan, who left Grubb & Ellis after 13 years to become Cushman & Wakefield's Midwest area leader. Also, top brokers Walter R. Murphy and Pat Sullivan left Grubb & Ellis for Cushman & Wakefield.

"I'm extremely happy to be returning to Chicago and view this appointment as a tremendous opportunity to build upon Grubb & Ellis' position in the Midwest," O'Hanlon says in a statement.

"In his extensive career, Michael has financed, developed, acquired, owned, sold, leased and managed significant real estate holdings," adds Grubb & Ellis chief executive officer Barry Barovick in a statement. "He also has a tremendous recent record in managing and growing brokerage and property management businesses."
