The approval, in this case, is tied to the fact that during the nearly two years of demolition followed by new construction, Resorts will operate with only 478 hotel rooms. According to the state legislation permitting gaming, a hotel is required to have at least 500 guest rooms in order to be able to operate a casino.

Demolition of the existing North Tower, built in the early 1960s, is slated to begin next month and run through early next year. The facility will first be stripped of its furnishings, most of which will be donated to charity, according to hotel officials. The demolition will be manual, without the special effects of a Las Vegas-style implosion.

The new tower, which when combined with the demolition will cost $115 million, is projected for completion by the middle of 2004, according to officials at this gaming mecca's oldest casino/hotel. The new tower will boost the hotel's overnight capacity to close to 900 rooms.
