Many chain stores only sell computers with Microsoft operating systems.

Apple opened its first store in New York City in July, in the Manhattan SoHo district. The SoHo store is Apple's largest retail store to date.

"Fifteen months after opening our first retail store, our 32 stores are attracting over 100,000 visitors each week," says Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive officer, in a statement.

Based on statistics from Apple's first year in retail, about half of those who buy a Macintosh at an Apple store are new or returning to the Mac platform. For people who want to switch to the Mac, all Apple stores now feature a new "Welcome to Mac" section specifically designed to help customers interested in switching to the Mac or upgrading their systems.
