Contracts for each of these companies are being negotiated with the city department of aviation.

The expansion of Concourse A will add 10 main-line gates, a commuter facility for six regional jets, a facility sub-core, aircraft parking ramps and all aircraft and facility support infrastructure.

The expansion is necessary because all of DIA's gates are in use.

Seven of the 10 jet gates are planned for Frontier Airlines, which is expanding its fleet by 50% by 2005.

The additional gates will help to meet the future growth needs of the DIA's airline partners. Construction is slated to start in spring 2003, with completion in mid-2004.

The announcement of the concourse A expansion comes on the heels of the groundbreaking for the new DIA Westin Hotel two weeks ago. The 519-room hotel is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2005.

The $125-million hotel will be located at the southeast corner of DIA's Terminal. The city will sell bonds to finance the construction of the hotel. Bonds will be paid using revenue from the hotel's operation. Westin will operate and manage the hotel under a contract with the city.

"It is my belief that the city of Denver needs to continue to expand its economy, create new jobs and make sure that Denver International Airport continues to expand its capacity as a major national and international air transportation hub," Mayor Wellington Webb says. "The expansion of Concourse A and the groundbreaking for the new Westin Hotel are both investments in Denver's future economic growth that will help meet the needs of both travelers and airlines."
