William Ellis, director of planning and development for the Newton, MA-based developer tells GlobeSt.com that the lifestyle center would have some characteristics of an outdoor mall with an upscale design. The Hingham Plaza is currently a 1960s style strip center on 37 acres of land. Ellis says that his company has acquired an additional six acres and will be tearing down a number of buildings to develop the center.
Among the tenants of the new mall, which only has about 35,000-sf of space left to fill, are Kohl's, Talbots and Bread & Circus. Ellis notes that the project requires a special permit from the town because of its size. He says the town's Zoning Board of Appeals is currently reviewing the plans and if the project is approved, the company hopes to begin construction by Nov. 1 with hopes that it will be ready for the next holiday shopping season in October 2003.
The company is building similarly styled centers in Millbury, MA and Canton, CT.
