A Department of Administration mail clerk and three Oregon State Police troopers exposed to the unknown substance remained in the building after the evacuation while the City of Salem Haz-Mat team field tested the unidentified material, which was determined to be benign but remains otherwise unidentified.
The postmark on the letter is not being released as part of the investigation, which is being handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Some radio news reports stated the letter had a foreign postmark, possibly Pakistan, but that has not been confirmed by GlobeSt.com. The Capitol building, evacuated at 12:40 p.m., is expected to reopen by Thursday morning.
