"Stop & Shop and Shaw's are very aggressive," acknowledges Shafi Malek, facilities manager for the mid-sized company. This store will be the 15th for Roche while Stop & shop has 325 stores in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and Shaws has 187 stores in the New England region. But Malek tells GlobeSt.com that the increased competition does not affect his company. "We have our own niche," he says. "We're an upscale market with a focus on prepared foods."
Malek points out that while Roche Bros.' stores are smaller than their competitors, they are able to compete on pricing. He also notes that the chain is plans to open one to two new stores a year in eastern Massachusetts, with an eye towards branching out to the Northern and Western parts of the state.
