General Growth and its partner, AMC Entertainment Corp. of Kansas City, MO plan to break ground on the $30 million venture Nov. 13 and have it opened by May 2003, Altamonte Springs, FL planning department officials confirm to GlobeSt.com.

Altamonte Springs Investments principals Michael B. Vlass and James F. Jacoby are canceling plans to construct a $16 million, 75,000-sf, 3,750-seat multiplex cinema at their planned one-million-sf Altamonte Town Center because the project would be only a mile from General Growth's movie house.

Officials at both development offices couldn't be reached at GlobeSt.com's publication deadline. But Altamonte Springs city staffers tell GlobeSt.com on condition of anonymity two almost identical theaters in the same community couldn't survive because the population density would not support both projects. Altamonte Springs, seven miles north of Downtown Orlando, has an estimated permanent of 45,000.

Vlass and Jacoby, meanwhile, continue to plan the ground-breaking for their $150 million, urban village-designed Altamonte Town Center, the most ambitious commercial/retail/residential undertaking the Orlando suburb has attempted in 25 years.
