The 8,370-sf building, located at 9224 N. 5th St. in the city's Sunnyslope area, was sold for $500,000 to the Assistance League of Phoenix by the Communications Workers of America Local 7019, which had used the property as a union hall for the last 18 years.
Steve Bodeman of DAUM Commercial Real Estate Services in Phoenix tells GlobeSt.com that the building will be used as a distribution and shopping center by the new owners. "They will be bringing buses of kids into the facility and let them pick out new clothing," said Bodeman, who negotiated the deal for the seller.
Bodeman said the building, which once served as a church, had been turned into a meeting hall by its prior owners, who added a second story for offices over the former sanctuary. The union put the property up for sale about a year ago when it relocated to larger quarters along 23rd Avenue, he said.
The new owners, which will fund the charity center through the sale of used clothing at a thrift store on 7044 N. 7th St., was represented in the transaction by Susan Thomas, an Assistance League member and a broker with Realty Executives.
