Owners of just 23 of the 151 buildings that will carry the landmark designation, which require greater city scrutiny over improvements to buildings, gave their consent to the measure (See:Armitage-Halsted Owners Resist Landmarking.) However, city officials argue the Armitage-Halsted District is one of the last surviving commercial areas beyond Downtown.
"Demolition and redevelopment have destroyed or diminished many of our first-generation neighborhood shopping districts," says department of planning and development commissioner Alicia Berg. "These buildings should be preserved and enjoyed for generations to come."
