Jeweler's Row was recommended for landmark status in July 2002. The Pittsfield Building was designated a landmark in November.

At $2 million, the largest item in the project budget is renovating the elevators that serve the 39-story building. However, the $1.93 million in façade restoration and repair is likely to receive the most attention by those living, working and touring Downtown.

Pittsfield Development LLC, which paid $15 million for the 438,000-sf building in July 2000, has agreed to light its crown in addition to cleaning the façade, according to department of planning and development officials. The illumination will cost an extra $70,000.

The project is expected to be completed in September 2005. The work also includes $1 million for tenant improvements and asbestos removal, along with $750,000 to upgrade the building's mechanical systems, largely the heating, ventilating and air conditioning.
