The two parcels are worth $390,000, according to a city appraisal, but will be offered to developers at a minimum bid of $100,000. The department got the green light this week from the city's community development commission.
The 45 spaces are insufficient for shoppers in the ethnically diverse retail district, laments 50th Ward Alderman Bernard Stone. "Devon Avenue is probably the most unnoticed shopping area in Chicago," he asserts. "Unfortunately, you can't get there because traffic is so bad."
Most of the parking along Devon Avenue is limited to meters, with limited availability along residential side streets.
