The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the site located at 29710 Woodward, between 12 Mile Road and 13 Mile Road. Once the demolition of the hotel is complete, Fifth Third Bank will build a 4,000-sf bank on the site, with four teller stations, four drive through lanes, and a drive-up 24-hour ATM.
Kingswood was one of the city's most notorious flophouses, at one time garnering almost 75 police calls a year in the 1990s. Two years ago, the city created a Hotel and Motel Ordinance that offered incentives to developers to rehabilitate the various weekly rental room joints in the city.
Fifth Third used this ordinance to achieve approval for the Kingswood site. The company only had to pass planning commission approval for a site plan in October 2002.
Fifth Third currently operates 76 banking centers, including 17 Bank Mart locations open seven days a week inside some Farmer Jack grocery stores.
