"This is a great honor," says Mayor Wellington E. Webb of Denver. "The Stapleton Redevelopment Project represents the hard work, vision and successful approach to the opportunity Stapleton provides us. It's gratifying that our community is consistently recognized for this development."

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, president of the U.S. Conferences of Mayors, says the nation's mayors and the business community are "tackling important issues like jobs, housing, Brownfields redevelopment and infrastructure redevelopment to improve the quality of life in our cities. Last year, the Stapleton project bested more then 250 cities from across the globe when it was awarded the Stockholm Partnerships for Sustainable Cities Award.

When Stapleton is complete, it will provide housing for 30,000 and jobs for 35,000 Denver residents. Currently, 60 houses are now occupied in Stapleton's first residential neighborhood, and more than 750,000 sf of retail space is under construction. Twelve thousand permanent jobs have been created at the new Stapleton retail power plant, and developers employ a significant number of minority- and women-owned business and contractors.
