To the existing seven--Morristown, Pleasantville, Rutherford, South Amboy, South Orange, Riverside and Rahway--the state has added Metuchen. Officially kicking off the expansion of the statewide program, McGreevey and acting DOT commissioner Jack Lettiere dropped by Metuchen, in Middlesex County, yesterday, to drop off a check for $600,000 earmarked for local improvements.
"In order to improve our quality of life and combat sprawl, we must implement smart growth planning that includes the expansion of transit villages," McGreevey commented during the check presentation. "Metuchen is our first step [in expanding the program]."
The state's Transit Village Program partners communities with 10 state agencies to help move each individual project forward. Towns designated as such are given priority for funding and technical assistance, as well as adding other modes of transportation to the mix, including bus, light rail and ferry service.
