The issue was first raised in the Boston Herald but a Romney spokesperson, Karen Grant emphasizes to GlobeSt.com that the option is "only one of many options being explored" regarding casino gambling in the state. Grant tells GlobeSt.com that the option would involve banning casinos in the state in return for payments from casino owners in neighboring states. The governor is having private discussions about the matter, says Grant, and is "weighing the pros and cons."

Grant adds that Robert Pozen, the head of commerce and development for the state, is going over the study complied by a committee put together by former governor Jane Swift on the impact of casino gambling in the state as well as a number of other studies on the issue. "Everything is still on the table," says Grant. "The governor's position will be made public in April."
