Portland's Oregon Stadium Campaign may have sweetened its bid to land the relocated Montreal Expos, with the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde offering to back bonds to finance a $350-million stadium. The tribe would receive permission to build a casino in Portland, according to a report.
The stadium campaign plans to make a presentation March 20 to the MajorLeague Baseball relocation committee, convening in Phoenix, AZ. Campaign officials are preparing the bill for submittal to the Legislature by the end of the month. A casino would require state approval.
The decision on where to relocate the Expos lies with baseball commissioner Bud Selig. Ownership must be approved by at least 21 of the major leagues' 29 owners. Portland is among a host of cities and regions vying for the team, starting with the 2004 season.
