Colom told WBBM-AM residents in her ward objected to plans for a Home Depot, wanted less development and more affordable housing.

Elsewhere, Alderman Eugene Schulter retained his post by garnering 64% of the vote in his 47th Ward on the North Side despite his opponent's claims he was too cozy with developers and real estate interests. Schulter also is a licensed real estate broker.

Alderman Burton Natarus fended off a challenger in the 42nd Ward, which includes the Loop and Near North Side communities, which continues to see the most development.

Run-off elections will be held April 1 in five other wards where the top vote-getter failed to win a majority Tuesday night.
