In April, the giant screen will make its appearance at the United Artists Theater Colorado Center Stadium 9 at South Colorado Boulevard and Interstate 25.
United Artists is owned by Regal Entertainment, the world's largest movie theater chain. Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz is the largest shareholder of Regal.
For years there has been an IMAX theater in the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, but that tends to show more educationally and scientific-oriented films. Also, the museum gets the exclusive rights to its movies, so no other theaters in the area can show them, a spokeswoman for the museum tells GlobeSt.com.
Dick Westerling, spokesman for Regal, says United Artists will charge slightly more for the IMAX films than regular flicks. "We're evaluating our pricing right now," Westerling tells GlobeSt.com. He says the opening is targeted for early to mid-April.
"For a time period, the auditorium will be shut down," Westerling tells GlobeSt.com. "But it shouldn't be shut down long."
