The subcommittee provides funding for military construction projects in the United States and overseas, military family housing operations andconstruction, U.S. contributions to the NATO Security Investment Program,and the bulk of base realignment and closure costs.

The subcommittee appropriated $10.4 billion for these items in the FY2003Military Construction Appropriations Act, which the President signed intolaw on Oct. 23, 2002.

"I am honored to have been selected to chair the Subcommittee on MilitaryConstruction," said Knollenberg. "Military issues are going to be at theforefront of the debate in the 108th Congress. From a possible war with Iraqto homeland security, the military construction bill will be a priority thissession. I look forward to the challenge."

The subcommittee does have jurisdiction over facilities in Michigan, whichhouses 49 armories, including one in Pontiac in Knollenberg's district, andfivetraining site locations for the military. These sites cover 160,402 acres onwhich 1,014 buildings stand totaling 6,265,180 sf.

Knollenberg previously served as Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee onthe District of Columbia, which reviews the District's budget as well asprovides federal funding for certain operations.
