"This marks another milestone in the history of Silver Spring--the day that the Silver Theatre emerges from the dust of its past to become a showcase for film of all genres," Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan says. "The AFI Silver undoubtedly will become an internationally known landmark in the world of film." A short drive outside of Washington, DC off the Capital Beltway at 8633 Colesville Rd., AFI Silver will offer a 49,000-sf complex housing three theaters, one of which is the refurbished historic Silver Theatre designed by architect John Eberson in 1938. The structure had been destined for the demolition heap before area residents campaigned to save the building and had it designated an historic site.
The three theater spaces can accommodate audiences ranging from 400 down to 75. In addition to the screening rooms, AFI Silver will also have a café, retail space for film paraphernalia, office space, meting space, as well as reception and exhibition spaces. When it opens its doors next month, the redeveloped historic theater locale will play host to a bevy of activities ranging from independent and international film premieres and screenings, to filmmaker discussion panels and musical performances.
