The three new board members, including Randy Jones, Chip Owen and Larry Porter Sr., bring a diverse range of expertise to SEDC. Jones currently works as a prosecutor in the general crimes unit with the U.S. Attorney's Office and also serves as director and vice chairperson of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. Owen comes from the real estate arena, having previously practiced as an attorney in transactional real estate and construction. He is currently an owner of retail, industrial and office buildings poised for repositioning and redevelopment. Porter, once a member of the Black Economic Development Task Force, is president and director of business development for Quality Telecom Engineering & Construction Co.
The reappointed members, which includes Kurt Chilcott, Kathleen Garcia and Zoneice Jones, also have a varied wealth of experience to share with the board. Chilcott is the president/CEO of CDC Small Business Finance and also serves on the city's Small Business Advisory Board. In addition, he is chair of San Diego County's comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Committee and vice-chair of the National Association of Development Cos. Garcia brings a design perspective to the group, as she works as a landscape architect, planner and urban designer in her role as a principal at Wallace Roberts & Todd Inc. Jones comes from the non-profit sector, as she is the co-founder and president of PAZZAZ Inc., which works to better youth through innovative program design.
In their roles as SEDC board members, all six are expected to promote economic development and revitalization in Southeast San Diego. They will also provide economic development services and make recommendations regarding redevelopment plans and project areas.
