Initially, Denver's VA Medical Center was going to join Children's Hospital at Fitzsimons, a former Army Hospital Base being converted into a medical and bio-tech center, but it was pulled off the table because of the cost.
Now, Rep. Bob Beauprez, a freshman Congressman from Colorado's new 7th district, has convinced the House Veterans Affairs Committee to approve a request for $500 million to move Denver's VA Medical Center to Fitzsimons. If the $500 million stays in the final budget, the new hospital would be one of the largest construction projects in the metro area.
The VA hospital currently is on South Colorado Boulevard in Denver, next to the University of Colorado's Health Sciences Center, which also is moving to Fitzsimons. Many CU doctors staff the VA hospital, and they could share facilities and equipment.
The new plan would include a separate "federal tower" with a 112-bed VA hospital, a Department of Defense facility for personnel at the Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora and possibly a spinal-cord injury facility.
