A spokesperson for the Boston Redevelopment Authority tells GlobeSt.com that the purchase would ultimately save the city money on rent. "It was a situation of weighing the benefits of continuing to rent versus buying," she says. The city "decided the investment made sense in the long term."

The six-story building features 192 outdoor parking spaces and is nearly fully occupied by a number of municipal agencies as well as a few state agencies. Those include the city's Public Health Commission, Department of Inspectional Services, Department of Inspection Services, Fire Department - Prevention Services, Parks and Recreation Department and the state's Department of Transitional Assistance. Mount Vernon acquired the building three years ago for $23 million.
