"We are on schedule, on budget and looking forward to opening our doors on June 26," Wheeling Island president Scott Cooper says. The expansion comes just in time, since the gaming destination saw a whopping two million visitors in 2002.
The newly added section will be located adjacent to the existing facility, and the two structures will be connected to each other. When it opens, Wheeling Island will offer a wide array of new, as well as enhanced, options. Among the added amenities are an 8,500-sf showroom; a 151-room, 85,000-sf hotel; a new conference center; and 14,000 sf of dining space spread out among three restaurants. There will also be 35,000 sf of additional gaming space to accent the existing 55,000-sf gaming room, allowing space for 570 more slot machines.
Finally, Wheeling Island will enhance parking availability to accommodate up to 2,800 vehicles. "There is no doubt that the new gaming and hotel complex will make Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center a true gaming and entertainment destination," Cooper concludes.
