Details of the proposals emerged at the public inquiry into the Renzo Piano-designed 1,000-ft tower to be developed by Irvine Sellar. RLAM has commissioned Kohn Pedersen Fox to design a mixed-use scheme with 645,900 sf of offices and to include "enhanced bus station capacity", an issue used by critics to attack the Sellar tower. RLAM's plans would provide for a 40% growth in bus numbers using London Bridge station.
But the news is likely to inflame conservationists, some of whom would like to see no new towers built in central London. The government-sponsored architectural watchdog, CABE, is not taking such a radical line but would like to see a masterplan for the new towers. CABE would also like to see further improvements to the civic spaces and it is pushing for increased bus capacity.
