The Commission on Chicago Landmarks has recommended 24 buildings, most on Wabash Avenue between Washington and Monroe streets, to the City Council. Earlier this year, the commission had recommended a Class L tax break worth a potential $2.7 million for Pittsfield Development LLC, which is embarking on a two-year, $6-million renovation of the 76-year-old building that was once a candidate for condominium conversion.

While the Pittsfield Building already was designated a landmark in a separate recommendation, other building owners are expected to follow suit with Class L requests to help pay for renovation work to preserve the historic character of their buildings.

"People couldn't wait for the designation to get going on applying for Class L," says department of planning and development commissioner Alicia Berg.
