The shortlist includes some of the biggest names in Europe for design such as HOK, which designed the new Wembley stadium and Herzog & De Meuron, best known for the redevelopment of the Tate Modern art museum on London's South Bank. Other bidders include Arup/Foster & Partners, Terry Farrell & Partners, MBM Architectes and Richard Rogers/WS Atkins.
The land set aside for redevelopment is in the Lower Lea Valley in the East End of London and the winning bidder will also design and build the main Olympic arena. Masterplanning work will begin in August and be completed by January.
If the bid to host the games fails, the preferred bidder will still be expected to press ahead with a secondary redevelopment proposal for the Lower Lea Valley area if the bid fails.
London mayor Ken Livingstone said: "Some of the best known and most experienced practices in the world have demonstrated enormous enthusiasm for this crucial aspect of London's Olympic bid."
