The community development commission recently gave the department of planning and development authority to acquire property at 4709 S. Honore Ave. and 1821 W. 47th St. in the 47th/Ashland redevelopment area. One option already being considered is a full-service bank, the community development commission was told.
The El Centro Supermarket has been vacant for about five years, according to department of planning and development project manager Michelle Nolan. A neighboring house also is believed to be vacant, she adds. The two parcels include 6,850 sf of buildings on 9,250 sf of land, Nolan says, adding the properties have a history of city building code violations and liens.
Title is held by a LaSalle National Bank beneficial land trust. The parcels were most recently sold in September 2000 for $320,000, according to property records. The city will offer the owners fair market value, Nolan says.
The surrounding area includes a strong commercial district, Nolan reports. Acquisitions of the parcels will allow the city to stimulate redevelopment, she adds, as well as eliminate blight.
